Senior Whole Health Is The First Health Plan And SCO In Massachusetts To Offer Debit Card For OTC Items

CAMBRIDGE, January 6, 2014 – Senior Whole Health (SWH), a health plan for seniors who have both Medicare and MassHealth, has become the first health plan and the first Senior Care Options (SCO) plan in Massachusetts to offer members a free debit card to purchase over-the-counter pharmacy items that promote good health.

The "Healthy You Card", worth $25 each calendar quarter, can be used at CVS, Family Dollar, Rite Aid and Walgreens to purchase first aid supplies such as bandages and peroxide, dental items such as denture cleaners and adhesives, cold symptom products such as throat lozenges, and sun screen. The cards will be mailed to SWH members, pre-loaded with $25 in value and automatically replenished at the beginning of each quarter. The program began on January 1.

"We want to make it as easy as possible for our members to stay healthy," said SWH President Pamela Gossman. "Especially with seniors, small issues can lead to big issues and the 'Healthy You Card' will help our members take care of the small things before they lead to something else."

"The 'Healthy You Card' is an innovation, but it's also a natural extension of our model of providing comprehensive, prevention-based and patient-centered health care to seniors so they can keep living independently," said SWH Chairman & CEO Wayne Lowell.

Communities where SWH operates include Attleboro, Boston's Chinatown, Dorchester, Mattapan and Roxbury neighborhoods, Fall River, Framingham, Lawrence, Lowell, New Bedford, Quincy, and Worcester.
